Liev Schrieber celebrated his new Hamptons magazine cover story with old buddy, Niche Media chief executive Jason Binn, and Publisher Debra Halpert, at The Gates in New York City Monday night.

Schreiber shares a home in Amagansett with gal pal Naomi Watts and their two (rugrats?) sons, Alexander (Sasha), who turns 2 in July, and Samuel, six months old. How are they making out in the rain? “It’s a drag because you just end up eating all day at home," Schreiber said. "Or we go to Mary’s Marvelous! (in Amagansett) and eat those muffins, maple scones or a grilled cheese sandwich that just knocks your socks off.”

When asked about the infamous force behind the Niche Media luxury magazine chain that includes Hamptons, Gotham and (Miami Beach’s) Ocean Drive, Schreiber joked, “I’ve known Jason Binn since he was this big. He owes me a favor, so he put me on his magazine. “

So how did they meet? “Where’s Jason? Let’s get him over here,” Schreiber called out. “How did I first meet you?”

“It must have been when I first started Ocean Drive Magazine,” said Binn, who had magically appeared. He launched the Miami Beach glossy in 1993. The boys made some vague but knowing mention of Miami Beach nightclubs.
“We were both single. It’s a terrible story. Now we have kids,” explained Schreiber, who was just getting his riff warmed up. “No,” he decided, “we met at the New York Public Library. I was researching a movie I was doing about Ukrainian writers and I came across Jason‘s family. He comes from a long line of Ukrainian writers. “

“And I was doing a dissertation on political theories and philosophical ideas that most influenced our lives up to now, “ Binn joined in. “So it was a give and take.”

That’s their story and they're sticking to it, at least until the next one comes along.
