Hamptons elite welcomes actress Mariska Hargitay

For a certain crowd in the Hamptons, summer begins at Jason Binn’s house. The Niche Media mogul, who created Hamptons and Gotham magazines, brings out non-Hamptons celebs as well as the usual suspects to his Southampton home.

Sunday, he and wife Haley even got the elusive "Law and Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay -- this month’s Hamptons Magazine cover girl, seen here – to show up. “Happy Summer,” she announced. "Here’s to the kick off!"
“She doesn’t go out much,” Binn told the crowd, ”but she’s an amazing supporter of the town we live in. It really took a year to get her on the cover.”
How does he do it? “Anybody that meets Jason knows he’s a guaranteed good time,” Hargitay told us. “He’s a non-stop, traveling one-man party.”

“He’s a very handsome man,” deadpanned Kyle MacLaughlin, right, who never misses the party. On vacation from ABC's “Desperate Housewives,” he spends his time in the Hamptons working out, running and playing with his toddler son.

One theory: The celebs have to go out sometimes. They all told us all they want to do in the Hamptons is stay home and barbecue.

“Sitting outside in my own backyard with my goddaughter running around, that’s my perfect Hamptons day,” said Star Jones (seen here with Hoda Kotb), a Wainscott resident for 11 years. “Grilling a little fish, and spending time just with the people I love.”

“I hibernate in my house,” Hargitay told us. “That’s the whole point, isn’t it?” She bought her house out here two years ago, after coming out for 15. Her happy Hamptons Day? “To come out in the fall and winter and go on the beach with my son and husband.”

And a big welcome to the “Hoda Woman” (as Kathie Lee calls her), who stayed with jewelry designer Jennifer Miller. “Can you believe it, I’ve never been out to Southampton before?” Hoda Kotb gushed. It was 7 p.m., and she and Miller were just getting going. “We’re starting here and then we’re hopscotching around,” Kotb said. “There’s a party at a friend of hers [Jennifer] and then there’s a series of drinks and desserts.”

So, what does she think of the Hamptons? “C’mon!” she said. “What’s better than here?"

In playing Dr. Hank Lawson, a concierge doctor who caters to the Hamptons’ wealthy denizens in the USA Network hit “Royal Pains,” Mark Feuerstein frolics in a world of excess. He knows the territory.

“I grew up in Manhattan and went to a nice, private school on the Upper East Side,” he says, referring to Dalton School.

“We didn’t have the kind of money the kids I went to school with had, but they had birthday parties and weekends in Montauk, or someone’s estate in East Hampton,” says Feuerstein, 38, who calls the Post in between takes from “a beautiful restaurant on the shores of Strong Island.

“So I got to see the world that’s depicted in ‘Royal Pains,’ but I was never part of it — just like Hank Lawson.”

In the show’s pilot, Lawson was a star doctor at a city hospital who suddenly lost everything when a hospital benefactor died in his care. When his brother Evan, played with a goofball alacrity by Paulo Costanzo, hauls the depressed doctor off for a weekend of heiress hunting in the Hamptons, Hank saves a girl’s life at a mansion party. Soon, the area’s affluent — and slightly unhinged — residents are clamoring for Hank’s smart, thoughtful and, most important of all, discreet kind of medical attention.

To prepare for the role, Feuerstein tailed a doctor who showed him some of the more challenging aspects of the medical profession.

“I followed a brain surgeon into surgery,” he says. “He was standing over a man’s open scalp, and I was looking into the center of who this guy is. It was both terrifying and amazing.”

The experience doesn’t really help when Feuerstein has to pronounce “the insane ten syllable words like Glossopharyngeal Nerve,” but then “Royal Pains” is less about medical minutiae, and more about blending the right mix of bling, babes, and banter we’ve come to expect from USA.

While all of that makes for a pleasant shoot, at this point Feuerstein is simply glad to have a show people like.

He’s appeared on hits like “Sex and the City” and “Ally McBeal,” and had a recurring role on “The West Wing,” but he’s also well acquainted with the sting of unfulfilled promise. He starred in a number of short-lived sitcoms, including the long forgotten “Fired Up,” “Conrad Bloom,” and “Good Morning Miami.”
As such, he went into “Royal Pains” with guarded optimism.

“I remember people saying that USA doesn’t shoot pilots that they don’t air, so that was positive,” he says. “You get so thick-skinned after all the rejections and shows that don’t amount to much that you prepare yourself for the worst.”
It so happened that “Royal Pains” became, according to USA, the top-ranked first-year scripted series in cable history, averaging 7.5 million viewers per episode.

For season two, which premiered last week, the series has added Henry Winkler as Eddie Lawson, Hank’s ethically questionable father, who left the boys when they were kids.

The experience of working with Winkler, a legend since his time as Fonzie on “Happy Days,” was a thrill. It also helped Feuerstein add a deeper dimension to Hank.

“It was playing this hero,” Feuerstein says. “In the stage directions, it was described that ‘Hank Lawson will make an entire new generation of kids want to go to medical school.’”

But in the first season, Hank was a bit too perfect. With his constant saving of lives, and having gorgeous women flock to his door unannounced, the character was developing an unrealistic halo. Feuerstein is excited for the chance, with Winkler’s help, to tarnish that angelic quality.

“Eddie Lawson is this foil for Hank. He brings out the Hank that has a lot of rage about the fact that he was abandoned as a child,” Feuerstein says. “I even said to the writers at one point that it would be great to see a little more dirt under [his] fingernails.”

So Feuerstein, who lives in LA with his wife and three kids, heads into season two feeling fulfilled in several ways — finally enjoying a show with a future, while doing so in a place that feels like home.

“My brother and I sat reading Hamptons Magazine on the beach 10 years in a row,” he says. “Now I’m gonna be on the cover.”

Mariska Hargitay: Hamptons Magazine Cover Girl!

Mariska Hargitay celebrates her Hamptons Magazine cover during a Memorial Day party hosted by mag publisher Jason Binn and his wife Haley on Sunday (May 30) in Southampton, New York.

The 46-year-old Law & Order: SVU star wore Michael Kors and was accompanied by her husband, director Peter Hermann (their adorable son August napped this one out).

Also in attendance and pictured below: Desperate Housewives actor Kyle MacLachan (with his wife, PR guru Desiree Gruber), Elle’s creative director Joe Zee and Just Jared.

Hamptons Magazine had a kick-off party.

I've spent many a Memorial Day shivering at garden parties that the weather didn't really call for (and we didn't really dress for). Paying too much money for too little food at new hot spots garnering far too much hype. Scouring events for the hors d'oeuvres or gift bags overlooked in the wake of a suffering economy. And finally, heading back to the city prematurely with the shared sentiment that the Hamptons doesn't get good until Fourth of July. Not so this weekend. For the first time in years, for the first time since the economy faltered, the Hamptons kicked off in a manner that felt very Fourth-of-July-esque. Fire Marshals shut down club doors, restaurants and hotels couldn't accommodate last-minute walk-ins, cops perused overcrowded streets, and there were gift bags and hors d'oeuvres aplenty. Hamptons 2010 isn't "over" in the least - it's just beginning. Along with Cover Star Mariska Hargitay, Hamptons Magazine's Jason Binn and wife Haley Binn welcomed familiar faces and loyal supporters into the backyard of their bright, tented Southampton home on Sunday. Trays of champagne, Absolut concoctions, a line-up of notable Hamptons photographers (Rob Rich, Jerritt Clark, and John Roca) and a Ferrari stationed at the entrance reminded guests they were stepping inside one of the more coveted annual Memorial Day events. Inside, the very Hamptonites who provide the magazine's content (and the requisite gaggle of Housewives) enjoyed passed hors d'oeuvres by Elegant affairs, Smart Water, and lauding speeches from the gracious host. Calling attention to the front, Jason Binn took command of the microphone and thanked his staff, including publisher Debra Halpert and actress Mariska, whose cover story credits her ability to juggle being an actress, mother, charity founder, and Hamptons homeowner. Lending their support to the event were Hamptons Magazine devotees Beth Ostrosky Stern, Star Jones, Kyle McLaughlin, a majority of the "Real Housewives of New York City" cast, including Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, Kelly Bensimon, Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen, Ramona Singer and Mario Singer, and Hamptons mainstays Richard Johnson, Sessa Von Richtofen, Rosanna Scotto, Niche Media's Joanna Tucker, James Goll, Jared Epstein, Shawn Sachs, and Gen Art's Ian Gerard.

NIGHTLIGHT: HAMPTONS MAGAZINE’S ANNUAL CLAMBAKE AT MONTAUK YACHT CLUB, SATURDAY, JULY 25TH

Peachy Deegan headed east this past weekend to join the Niche Media Family last Saturday night at Hampton's Magazine Annual Clambake at the Montauk Yacht Club at 32 Star Island Road!A lovely soiree under the moonlight, it attracted an upbeat crowd that was well into the both the rhythm of the dance floor and the lovely lobster tails. Summer libations were courtesy of Sagatiba Cachaca and other cuisine included Steamers in a Bag and Corn on the Cob. In addition to the dance floor, a sunset bonfire lit up the ambiance which lended itself to a S'mores opportunity! In Commemoration of the Club's 80th Anniversary, the event was held outside by the docks which gave guests the opportunity to check out the boats in residence. The East Hampton Tweet scene was buzzing with star wattage last weekend when Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, and other A-list types headed to Long Island’s East End to celebrate the premiere of Kutcher’s new indie drama Spread—not to mention document every second of the festivities. Creating a fuss on Main Street, the Gotham-magazine-sponsored premiere drew hordes of paparazzi, screaming fans, and curious locals vying for Twitpics of @aplusk and @mrskutcher, who arrived hand in hand on the red carpet.

A far cry from Dude, Where’s My Car?, the movie is one part Shampoo (Kutcher conferred with Warren Beatty, the king of Los Angeles Lotharios, for advice) and one part Entourage. Kutcher stars as Nikki, a freeloader who uses his looks to seduce rich, hot older women (Anne Heche plays one of them) for their spoils. Sound familiar?

“People are going to say what they’re going to say, I don’t have any control over that,” Kutcher reflected. “I’ve actually managed to create a life that allows me to stay grounded spiritually and within my relationships.” But he hasn’t entirely shed his former Punk’d self: “I still like going out to the club!”

Indeed, post-premiere, Kutcher and his posse headed to Lily Pond with other Tinseltowners including Josh Lucas, Spread ingénue Margarita Levieva, and Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester, who, before jetting to the West Coast for the Teen Choice Awards, came out to support her boyfriend and Spread co-star, Sebastian Stan. Also in the crowd: Niche Media founder Jason Binn and Hampton veterans Russell Simmons and Donna Karan, who cut a rug on the dance floor to Michael Jackson hits spun by D.J. NVM. At one point in the evening, Moore took to her camera phone to take Twitpics of Kutcher with the cast of the CW’s The Beautiful Life, a Kutcher-produced show that’s loosely based on his days as a male model. It’s set to air this fall.

So how does the King of Twitter feel about Ellen DeGeneres approaching him in “follow” rankings? “I just hope Ellen and everybody else uses it as a positive resource to unify and bring people together, because that can make a difference in the world.” Fair enough. Between spending time with his adorable daughters, Russell Simmons, the undeniable hip-hop and fashion legend, opens up to Niche Media's Hamptons magazine about how he's carved a new role for himself as philanthropy icon, his continuous path with yoga, and how he is transforming lives through art.Simmons' devoted yoga practice is well-known, as is his adherence to spiritual principles so it’s no surprise that he names the meditative practice as one of his favorite activities in the Hamptons, telling Hamptons mag that he and his daughters "like to go to the beach, and to yoga - they've been doing it their whole lives."When it comes to giving back, the soulful Simmons tells Hamptons mag that, "All charities are struggling a little bit right now. When people stop giving, it's good to remind them that just because you lost money in the market that day doesn't mean you stop giving to the poor."

Those words of wisdom are just the reason that Simmons will flex his charity muscles with the Art For Life Garden party benefit on July 18th in East Hampton. The event benefits Simmons' Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, the organization he founded with his brothers, Danny and Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons, that connects disadvantaged youth with art programs. "It's nice to be around people you're partners with and friends with," Simmons tells Hamptons magazine, "It's a great place for charity. There are a lot of wealthy people and good organizations." On celebrating 10 years of his charity, Art For Life, Simmons opens up to Niche Media's Hamptons mag that, "It's a cycle of giving.” "The more you get, the more you give, so its humbling. Ashley Olsen Talks about her Fashion Line

Ashley Olsen, the half of the megastar twins who works full time in the fashion business now, appears on the cover of the July 4 issue of Hamptons Magazine. Inside, she gives an interview in which she talks about how her life has changed in recent years.

As head of The Row and Elizabeth & James, the two clothing labels she owns jointly with sister Mary Kate, Ashley has her hands full and is happy to be out of the spotlight and committed to her career in fashion. She told the magazine, “I’m not an actress. I’m not a public figure or acting as one,” but went on to say that she was leaving the door open to an acting job sometime in the nebulous future.

She also tells the magazine that she prefers a quiet life where she is not constantly pursued by the press, telling the magazine, “I’ve definitely had a past life of being a personality, and a very public one. But that’s not what makes me comfortable. I’m not an actress. I’m not a public figure or acting as one.” She said she planned a quiet Independence Day weekend staying in, or perhaps going out on a boat in Montauk.

In October, she and her sister Mary Kate plan to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss The Row, their higher end clothing line, and Elizabeth & James, their more affordable line, which is named after the twins’ two other siblings.

Across town, Molly Sims broke into an impromptu version of P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) at Hamptons Magazine's tail party at Tommy Hilfiger's new East Hampton outpost. There debuting
Hilfiger's T-Studio, Molly told us P.Y.T. was her favorite Michael Jackson hit, right after she broke into song. "I grew up listening to Michael Jackson," said Sims. "That song is the best."

Molly's
timing was perfect as DJ Sam Siegler, who already had the song queued up, began to play P.Y.T. as soon as the words came out of her mouth. Also celebrating at the Tommy Hilfiger store in East Hampton was Beth Ostrosky Stern. "He was my first concert ever," Beth told us, refering to Jackson. "I remember seeing the (Thriller) video when I was little. We all went and crowded around the TV
when it premiered. It was amazing. I remember it so well."

In Glossy Glory, a Coming-Out for Surfers

A tough crowd always shows up at Ditch Plains — this bruiser was waiting for his heat in the Anything Goes round of the contest finals.

Hamptons Magazine, the glossy chronicler of the rich and the fabulous on the East End, has given surfing the equivalent of a debutante’s coming-out.
A fashion spread features the model/bathing-suit-designer-who-surfs, Tori Praver. She is shown striking various poses with various surfboards at the Ditch Plains beach in Montauk. A guide describes several named, local breaks running from Westhampton to the far East End. It includes Ditch Plains — warning that the spot has “more wanna-be posers than you’ll ever see,’’ with no reference to the magazine’s above-mentioned fashion shoot there. But it does not name any of the breaks in Southampton, the hometown of the guide’s author, Shane Dyckman of the Flying Point Surf Shop.

Nonetheless, Hamptons readers are told that in Southampton, “Surfers always get right into all the clubs — velvet ropes and all.”

Surfing etiquette even makes it into the magazine’s “Hot” and “Not” list: “Snaking” rides — that is, butting in on a fellow surfer’s wave and stealing it — is listed as an in thing to do; showing respect for one’s fellow surfer by waiting one’s turn is, on the other hand, listed as being out of fashion. This might have been a joke, but it is hard to tell.

It is all part and parcel of a new and un-abating embrace of surfing by the boldface names set this summer.

Regardless, we at Waves can happily report that some things have not changed: Nothing resembling approval has come from stealing waves this year. And in spite of an influx of new surfers still learning the ropes, general etiquette seems to be holding at the more popular breaks throughout the area. (The crew at the Hilo surf shop in Hilo, Hawaii, has a great primer on the rules of the lineup that should hold for anywhere in the world.)

And for all those whose passion for surfing has nothing to do with getting past the velvet ropes at the right clubs, Waves attended and photographed last week’s Rell Sunn surf contest, which went back to the basics: Having fun and making the most of whatever waves were kind of enough to show up. (Better still, the contest raised $36,000 for three families contending with cancer.)

Ashley Olsen: I've Given Up Acting for Fashion

Ashley Olsen has confirmed that she has given up acting to work full-time in the fashion business.

"I used to be in the entertainment industry," Mary-Kate’s twin tells Hamptons magazine, on sale now. "And now I feel passionate about the fashion industry. I understand what it takes to make a brand and to have an eye for product that sells. I don't have the time to step away for a month. I hold myself accountable every day."

Based in New York ("I can actually live here"), Ashley flies to her home in Los Angeles about every five weeks to visit her boyfriend, actor Justin Bartha of The Hangover and the company DualStar that she runs with her sister Mary-Kate, who she says "couldn't be more supportive" of her new career path. Because of her exhausting routine, she unwinds with yoga... and lots of junk food.

“I am literally the worst eater in the world," the self-professed "French fries and hamburger girl" tells the mag. "Being in the garment district, it's Subway or pizza. I never actually thought about what I eat." However, a recent yoga retreat made her rethink what she's been putting into her body. "I learned about cleansing and eating right for your body. I came back energized."

So does Ashley's new life mean she's done with acting forever? "Never say never," she says. But adds: "I really just love my job."

Ashton Kutcher, Anne Heche Expose Their Onscreen Sex Life

How did Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche prepare to shoot their explicit new film Spread? By scurrying to the gym and slimming down. "I did everything I possibly could to give him a run for his money onscreen," Heche, 40, told PEOPLE at Saturday night's premiere of the movie in East Hampton, N.Y. "I ran and I did a few more sit-ups than normal ... and stayed away from the butter." Kutcher, 31, who plays a hustler sleeping his way into a life of privilege (and seducing Heche's character along the way), likewise dropped weight. "I had just played a movie [Personal Effects] where I played a wrestler," he told PEOPLE, "so I had to lose like 10 pounds and stop eating and take care of myself. I really cut back to a meal a day. I was probably down to 175 pounds." Heche said she also wanted to look good next to the film's third costar, Margarita Levieva, who is a full decade Heche's junior. Both actresses credited Kutcher's wife, Demi Moore, for her support of the sexually charged project. "Demi was there a lot," Levieva said. " She was kind to me. She wasn't there to freak us out or anything. She was incredibly kind and generous and made me feel safe." The actors said they took the sexual nature of their roles seriously. "We wanted to create something that nobody's ever done before," Heche said. "We wanted to be more outrageous and dangerous. Nobody was joking around about it." "We entered into these scenes and said, 'What are we going to do to make this honest?'" said Kutcher. "It's our job." How did Moore, 46, feel about the finished product? "I'm a big fan of the movie," she told PEOPLE. Saturday's premiere was sponsored by Niche Media and Gotham magazine.

Cross-dressing Liev Schreiber Wows Ang Lee With Legs

Liev Schreiber plays a cross-dresser in Ang Lee's forthcoming Taking Woodstock, and he'd like you to know that he's totally okay with dressing as a woman: "I've done it once before," he told us last night at the Gates, at a party celebrating his cover story in Hamptons magazine. "I'd just gotten out of school the first time I did it. I was such an excited drama student back then that I did a ton of research that I guess I kind of borrowed from this time." He continued: "But there isn't really a tremendous need for that. Putting on women's clothing and acting like a woman is something that comes naturally to men," he said. "All men do it, whether publicly or privately. I personally believe that all men enjoy it." But how, exactly, did Schreiber win the role, and the chance to showcase his superior cross-dressing ability in an Ang Lee movie? "He really did like my legs. When I went to his office, the first thing he said to me was, 'Wow, you have really nice legs.' I thought, 'This part is mine.'"
